We intuitively use touch to connect with each other, to support and encourage, conveying compassion and love. Holistic massage can be richly comforting, and positive gentle touch can also have a deeply prolific effect on you, your baby and those around you.
After childbirth you may be unusually emotional and fatigue will be a problem. Give yourself time to get back to normal and get plenty of rest. Try not to do too much, other than care for your baby – and let other people help out.
After the mental, emotional and physical strains of childbirth, new mothers need to be nurtured themselves, and Antenatal massage is a perfect way to relax the mind, body and spirit, renewing energy, encouraging deep sleep and helping the body to regain its shape. Postnatal massage can also help to relieve depression and aid in overall wellbeing.
Most women experience the baby blues, in which they feel weepy for no obvious reason and experience a sense of helplessness (this usually happens around the fifth day after delivery). A spell of the baby blues is normal for new mothers, and doesn’t last long. It must not be confused with postnatal depression. If you suffer from the baby blues, let someone know – share your thoughts and feelings with your partner, Health visitor, GP, a friend, whoever you find most approachable. Worry and stress can have it’s own negative effects.
Postnatal depression tends to occur later than the baby blues, and the symptoms are those of classic depression. Misery, fear and anger directed to yourself, your partner, your baby, or anyone else around. Prolonged periods of irritability, fatigue and sleeplessness are key indicators that you may need support/assistance.
Unlike the baby blues postnatal depression may not show itself until some months after the birth and symptoms such as difficulty sleeping/waking early (not due to baby), changes in appetite (not related with breast feeding), feelings of apathy, lack of concentration, irrational thoughts, despair and negative feelings may present themselves, signalling your need for professional help through your GP (complimented by complementary holistic therapy).
Holistic Massage is especially beneficial. The primary aim being to relax the mind, body and spirit, relieving the stresses and strains, enabling you to better deal with the emotional highs and lows that are commonly experienced by new mothers (and also fathers).
Gentle massage can do a lot to relieve the discomfort associated with childbirth and breast feeding, soothing and alleviating emotional and physical fatigue.
Depending on your healing process, your general comfort and needs, specific attention to the following areas can also aid in your general wellbeing:-
Feet - Professional massage of the feet and ankles can relieve stiffness and tension within the body. A tender foot massage conditions the feet and helps to alleviate tired/aching muscles, improving circulation and rebalancing. For a therapy involving only the feet, please see THAI FOOT MASSAGE.
Abdomen - Gentle effleurage of the Abdomen (to be carried out only after your postnatal check-up, usually 6 weeks after the birth) can be hugely beneficial in helping the body regain its shape and can enhance the chi (overall body energy), alleviating conditions such as constipation. Also available advice and/or massage of the breast to soothe and promote the production of milk (Option A).
Scalp & Face - A gentle scalp massage is particularly helpful for relieving tension and soothing jangled nerves, incorporating a relaxing face massage helps to relax and smooth the stresses from the features (Option B). For a therapy involving predominantly the Face (and scalp), please see TIBETAN FACE MASSAGE.
Hand & Arm – A deeply relaxing massage can provide relief from stiff and tense muscles. Conditioning the hands and nails and helping to reduce minor swelling
/puffiness (Option C). For a therapy involving only the hands, please see
During your Postnatal period Reiki and other forms of appropriate massage can soothe and relax, helping to relieve general discomfort, anxiety, stress and worry:-
Reiki – A versatile therapy, Reiki can be received fully clothed and in any comfortable position. It is a deeply relaxing, soothing and non invasive therapy, said to direct Universal energy wherever it is needed. Helping to alleviate constipation, stress, anxiety and depression, beneficial both during and after pregnancy.
Indian Head - A gentle Indian head massage is particularly helpful for relieving tension commonly found in the upper back, shoulders and neck area, clearing and enabling clarity, soothing tension away.
